Britain to take the lead in rebuilding Kyiv after war

Britain will take the lead in the post-war reconstruction of Kyiv and the Kyiv region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced it in a video message on 9 April.

He noted that the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson expressed Britain's readiness to help rebuild the Kyiv region destroyed by the Russians today during his visit to the Ukrainian capital.

The Prime Minister also provided Zelenskyy with specific answers to the question of arms supplies.

The President noted that during all 45 days of the full-scale invasion of Russia, he raised three issues in talks with foreign partners: specific defense assistance, specific assistance to the people, and specific security guarantees for Ukraine.

"Among the priority tasks for our diplomacy is the introduction of more painful restrictions on Russia's cash flows. This is especially true of the oil business," Zelenskyy said.

He noted that the task of the anti-war coalition is to end the war started by Russia as soon as possible, liberate Ukrainian land from invaders, and guarantee the security of Ukraine and, consequently, the security of democracy and freedom of peoples in Eastern Europe.

"This is actually a strategy of protection for every civilized state–to put as much pressure on Russia as possible to restore peace and security, restore international law, and stop the catastrophe from the use of force–the catastrophe that will inevitably hit everyone. Because Russia's aggression was not intended to be limited to Ukraine alone, to the destruction of our freedom and life. The whole European project is the target of the Russian Federation," Zelenskyy stressed.

The President added that he had received assurances from the Austrian Chancellor that forcing Russia to make peace was as important to them as it was to other responsible states. Austria and its partners promise to continue sanctions against Russia until it withdraws all its forces from Ukraine's sovereign territory.

Zelenskyy thanked the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for 10bn dollars in assistance to Ukrainian internally displaced people.

Ukraine calls on its foreign partners to take part in the reconstruction of the regions affected by the Russian attack. Australia was invited to take the patronage of the Kherson region.

The Kyiv region has already become one of the most destroyed by the Russian occupiers. The enemy literally tried to eradicate some settlements, in particular Borodyanka, Makariv, Bucha, Gostomel, and Irpin.
