The UN Human Rights Council resolution was supported by 33 countries. 12 abstained, while China and Eritrea opposed.
The United Nations also called on russia to immediately cease hostilities against Ukraine and to refrain from attacks on civilians and facilities. The aggressor country is required to renounce sponsored disinformation and propaganda of war, as well as to provide access to persons who were transported from Ukraine and detained in russia or occupied.
Ukrainian authorities appealed to the UN Human Rights Council requesting to organize a special session to consider russia's war crimes against civilians.
On April 7, the General Assembly temporarily suspended russia's participation in the Human Rights Council. The reason for the resolution was gross human rights violations in the city of Bucha in Kyiv oblast.
