Kuleba goes to Brussels to promote sixth package of EU sanctions on russia

The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba has started a visit to Brussels to promote the sixth package of EU sanctions, which should include an oil embargo, - he wrote about it on Twitter.

"I will also focus on further weapons supplies and granting Ukraine EU candidate status," the statement said.

He discussed the status of the candidate with the European Commissioner, the Hungarian Oliver Varhelyi.

"It is time to legally consolidate Ukraine on its path to the European Union and make Europe stronger, safer and more prosperous," the minister said.

The Head of Austrian Foreign Ministry Alexander Schallenberg has said that the European Union will agree on the sixth package of sanctions against russia these days.

The sixth package of sanctions against russia was presented on May 4, but it has not been voted on yet. An agreement cannot be reached due to Hungary's position on the oil embargo, which is proposed to be introduced gradually so that EU countries will stop buying crude and refined russian oil by the end of the year. Slovakia and Hungary, as the most dependent, are proposed to impose a 2024 embargo.

However, Hungary does not agree to the proposed conditions and insists that oil imports from russia to it continue through pipelines and stop only by ships. Prime Minister Victor Orban also believes that all oil issues should be resolved at the summit of EU leaders, and it is scheduled only for the end of May.

Some EU countries are proposing to adopt an embargo-free package in order not to delay sanctions. However, others believe that this will show the weakness of the European Union.
