The UK Ministry of Defence, citing its intelligence, said that on 14 December, Russia appears to have used the AS-24 KILLJOY (NATO classification) ballistic missile for the first time since August this year. Russia launched at least one missile into central Ukraine, likely targeting a military airfield.
The agency notes that one of the six ‘super weapons’ announced by Putin in 2018, the KILLJOY missile has been earmarked to play a major role in Russia's future military doctrine. In the war in Ukraine, Russia has reserved its weapons for what it perceives as high-value, well defended targets.
KILLJOY [the Kinzhal missile] has almost certainly had a mixed combat debut. Many of its have likely missed their intended targets, while Ukraine has also succeeded in intercepting attacks by this supposedly 'undefeatable' system," the statement said.
