Odesa mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov has been detained at Kyiv Boryspil airport, the National Anticorruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) has confirmed.
The spokesperson for the State Border Service of Ukraine, Oleh Slobodyan, told Ukrayinska Pravda that Trukhanov flew from Warsaw to Kyiv on the morning of 14 February.
He was detained by border guards at the airport and handed over to NABU agents.
Trukhanov was immediately served with the indictment.
"The border guards handled this citizen as was instructed by one of the law-enforcement agencies, and informed the initiator. NABU agents arrived and served him [Trukhanov] with the indictment," Slobodyan said.
Trukhanov is suspected of embezzlement of property through abuse of power alongside several other Odesa city council officials.
Later in the day, the Special Anticorrruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) and the NABU said that they would ask a court to arrest and grant him bail of 50m hryvnyas, RBC Ukraine reported quoted SAPO head Nazar Kholodnytskyy.
They hope the Solomyanskyy district court in Kyiv would hear the case today.
